Why I Write

Updated: Mar 21, 2024

Middle school is one of the most challenging periods of time in the lives of adolescent girls. Hormonal changes directly impact every girl’s physical, mental and emotional development, health and well-being. At approximately age 12, as I entered 7th grade at a new middle school, I began writing in my diaries and journals. I discovered that writing was a great escape from the pressures of awkward encounters with teenage boys, and incessant exposure to mean girls’ gossip. Writing in my journals was my favorite place to explore creative thoughts, ideas, dreams, hopes, and wishes.

Writing as an adolescent empowered me to develop peace and tranquility with my mind, heart and soul. It taught me that the most trusted relationship is the one established with my soul, a powerful connection easily reached every time I write. This was when I realized that writing is a calling. It is a profoundly spiritual, cathartic experience. It is my raison d’etre, my reason for being. It is freedom and a balm for my soul.

As a messenger of hope, my words can potentially help others to heal from depression, fear, abandonment, loneliness, emotional and physical domestic violence, and lack of confidence. Writing Journal Reflections With 2020 Vision enabled me to celebrate the many joys, opportunities for growth, and blessings experienced with family, friends and colleagues in my extraordinary life.
